The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies Ever

-1 1/2 cups butter, softened
-2 cups white sugar
-4 eggs
-1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
-5 cups all-purpose flour
-2 teaspoons baking powder
-A pinch of salt.

DIRECTIONS:
1.In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).

2.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

3. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven.

4.Cool completely and serve.

I like to ice the cookies when they have cooled, but it's not necessary. If you'd like to ice them, and make your own icing, here's a recipe I use quite often.

Buttercream Icing

-1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons shortening
-1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons butter, softened
-3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
-3 cups confectioners' sugar
-1 tablespoon and 1-1/2 teaspoons milk

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, shortening, and vanilla. Blend in the sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the milk, and continue mixing until light and fluffy. Keep icing covered until ready to use.
